ALLATINI'S MANSION
DESIGNED BY VITALIANO POSELLI

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION: 1862-1874

The mansion of the Allatini family is a living monument and part of the city's cultural heritage.
Its construction began in 1862 and was completed in 1874, in the heart of Thessaloniki at that time, the so-called "frangomachalas".
The mansion was designed by the architect Vitaliano Poselli, whose work is clearly influenced by the architects Donato Bramante and Giacomo Barozzi da Vinciola.
It was used as the seat and residence of the historic Jewish family of the Allattini from 1874 to 1911.
In 1904, the mansion was acquired Eduardo Allatini, who built the "Malakopi" portico in the southern part of the building, where the garden used to be (1907). The portico housed the Bank of Thessaloniki and other commercial shops.
In 1911 the Allatini family was deported to Italy after having previously transferred the mansion and the rest of its real estate to the "Anonymous Agricultural and Real Estate Company".
Until 1916, the complex housed law, insurance and banking offices, as well as the first branch of the Ionian Bank in Thessaloniki.
The complex was significantly damaged by the fire of 1917, and in 1925 it was transferred to Eli Angel, Jose Sevi and Leon Aelion.
In 1926, architect Max Rubens undertook the remodeling of the building. Rubens added eclectic architectural elements, since eclecticism was popular in the city during the interwar period. The building’s architectural form was preserved until the great earthquake of 1978.  In 1978, according to the 505/78 protocol of the city’s planning department, the building was recognized as a work of art, that should be protected.
Today, only part of the main façade (not visible from the road) is preserved from its original form.  Under the cornice of the roof, part of the Latin inscription can still be seen: "ERECTUM A FUNDAMENTIS ANNO..." (CONSTRUCTION STARTED IN THE YEAR...)". The inscription is located at the emergency exit of the 1st floor, which houses Atelier Mesure Κonstantinos Tsigaros' Atelier Mesure.
